Topic: The Miracles of Jesus
Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” John 11:43
The purpose of the lesson is to teach that Jesus is the resurrection and the life, and that those who believe in him have the hope of eternal life.
Note: Teachers should read John 11:1 to 45 as they study the lesson.
Introduction
Children, Jesus did many miracles! He healed the sick, made the blind see and worked many wonders. Today we are going to talk about a very special miracle: Jesus made Lazarus come back to life! But would Lazarus live forever here on earth? No. So, what did Jesus want to teach us with this miracle? Let’s find out!
Development
The Bible tells us that Martha, Mary, and Lazarus were siblings and lived in Bethany. Jesus loved the family very much. One day, Lazarus became ill. Martha and Mary sent word to Jesus: “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.” John 11:3b. After a few days, Lazarus died. When Jesus came near Bethany, Lazarus had been buried for four days.
Martha went to meet Jesus and said, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” John 11:21. Then Jesus said something wonderful: “I am the resurrection and the life…” John 11:25a.
Then Mary also went to meet Jesus. She was very sad. Jesus saw Mary and the other people weeping. And do you know what happened? “Jesus wept.” John 11:35. Jesus loved that family and cared about their sorrow. Then Jesus went to the tomb of Lazarus.
A stone closed the entrance. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” John 11:39a. And Jesus said to Martha, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” John 11:40. They rolled away the stone. Jesus prayed to the Father and then cried out , “Lazarus, come forth!” John 11:43b. And a great miracle happened! Lazarus came out of the tomb. He was alive! How wonderful! Jesus showed His power over death.
What did Jesus want to teach us? That He is the Resurrection and the life. He said, “I am the resurrection and the life…” John 11:25a. Jesus wanted to show us that He can give us a life that never ends: eternal life. We can ask God for help when we are sick, afraid, sad, or when we have a problem. Jesus cares about us. But He wants to give us something far greater than the blessings of this life: salvation, eternal life.
And what do we need to do? Believe in Jesus! Jesus asked Martha, “Do you believe this?” John 11:26b. We also want to believe in the Lord Jesus. To have faith is to trust that God’s Word will be fulfilled even when we don’t yet see it happening.
Conclusion
Jesus brought Lazarus back to life, but He wanted to teach something much greater: He is the resurrection and the life! Jesus cares about us, hears our prayers, and wants to give us the greatest blessing of all: salvation, eternal life. So let’s believe in Jesus and trust in Him every day.
