Topic: The Miracles of Jesus
“And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.” John 21:6
The purpose of this lesson is to teach that Jesus wants the little ones to learn to obey His Word and, from an early age, to know and speak of His love.
Note: Teachers should read John 21:1-14.
Duration of the lesson: no more than 5 minutes.
Children
Children, after Jesus had resurrected some of his disciples went fishing. They got into the boat and spent the night fishing. But do you know what happened? “…and that night they caught nothing.” John 21:3b. Not a single little fish! The net was empty! When dawn broke, Jesus was on the shore and asked, “Children, have you any food?” John 21:5a. They answered him, “No.” John 21:5b. Then Jesus said, “And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” John 21:6a. And what did the disciples do? They obeyed Jesus!
They cast the net where Jesus told them to, and do you know what happened? The net was filled with fish! When they reached the shore, Jesus had prepared bread and fish for them. What a miraculous catch!
Jesus wanted to teach them something very important. Jesus had already told His disciples: “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” Mark 1:17. To be a fisher of men is to tell others about Jesus. Even though you’re little, you can learn to talk about Jesus. You can tell mom, dad, grandma, or a little friend: “Jesus loves you!”
And you can learn to obey, too. When mom says, “Let’s listen to the Word of God,” you’ll stop and listen. The disciples listened to Jesus and obeyed Him. We also want to learn to listen to and obey the Lord! And next month we’ll have Evangelism for Children, Intermediates, and Adolescents. With mom and dad’s help, you can invite someone to come and get to know Jesus.
Parents
Parents, before we teach our children to talk about Jesus to others, we need to help them get to know Jesus more and more each day. Even when they’re very young, we can take them to Sunday school and church services, tell them Bible stories, sing praise songs with them, and teach them to pray. The miraculous catch of fish also teaches us about obedience. In our daily lives, we can teach them to obey through simple actions: responding joyfully when they are called to pray and listening to the Word of God.
