Topic: The Miracles of Jesus
“And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.” John 21:6
The goal is to teach that God has called us to live a life with purpose: to follow Jesus and to be fishers of men, fulfilling this calling in obedience to the voice of the Lord.
Note: Teachers should read John 21:1 to 14 as they study the lesson.
Introduction
Children, what do you do during the day? You play, you go to school, you spend time with your family and friends… You do a lot of things, don’t you? But God also wants to use us to talk about Jesus to other people. And how do we do that? That’s what we’re going to learn today.
Development
After Jesus resurrected, some of his disciples were near the Sea of Tiberias. Peter said, “I am going fishing.” John 21:3a. The others went with him. They got into the boat, cast their nets, and spent the night fishing. But the Bible says, “… and that night they caught nothing.” John 21:3b. The net was empty! In the early morning, Jesus was on the shore, but the disciples did not yet know that it was Him. Jesus asked, “Children, have you any food?” John 21:5a.
They answered, “No.” Then Jesus said, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” John 21:6a. And what did the disciples do? They obeyed Jesus! They threw the net where Jesus commanded and… “… they were not able to draw it in, because of the multitude of fish.” John 21:6b. Children, the net that was empty was now full of fish! And John said, “It is the Lord.” John 21:7a.
When they got to the shore, Jesus had prepared bread and fish for them and fed them. And do you know how many big fish were in that net? One hundred and fifty-three! What a wonderful catch!
What does Jesus want to teach us? When Jesus called some of the disciples, he said: “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” Mark 1:17. But were they supposed to put people into a net? No! To be a fisher of men is to talk about Jesus to other people. And you can do that too! You can talk about Jesus to a friend at school, and invite them to the Sunday Bible school. If a classmate is sad, you can say: “Jesus loves you!”
And next month we will have the Evangelism of Children, Intermediates and Adolescents. Start praying to God for those you are going to invite. What did the disciples do when Jesus told them to cast the net? They obeyed! We too must listen to and obey the Word of God. And when we have a chance, we will talk about Jesus to everyone.
Conclusion
The disciples heard Jesus’ voice, obeyed, and the catch was wonderful! Jesus also called us to obey his voice and be fishers of men. And what does that mean? To talk about Jesus to other people! Let’s tell everyone that Jesus is our Savior!
