Topic: Do you know what salvation means?
“And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham”. Luke 19:9.
The purpose of the lesson is to show that, in order to receive salvation in Jesus, we need to recognize and confess our sins, repent and abandon what does not please God.
Note: The teachers should read Luke 19:1 to 10 when preparing this lesson.
Introduction
This month we will learn about something very important: salvation in Jesus! Let’s meet a man named Zacchaeus. He really wanted to see Jesus. But when he met Jesus, something wonderful happened: Zacchaeus realized he needed to change. Shall we see?
Development
One day, Jesus entered the city of Jericho and many people followed him. Zacchaeus lived there. He was rich and worked collecting taxes. When Zacchaeus heard that Jesus was passing by, he really wanted to see Him. But Zacchaeus was short and there were many people in front of him. What did he do?
He ran and climbed a tree! From up there, he would be able to see Jesus passing by. But as Jesus passed by, he had a great surprise. Jesus stopped, looked up and said: “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” Luke 19:5b. Jesus knew Zacchaeus’ name!
Zacchaeus quickly came down and welcomed Jesus into his home with joy. And that encounter with Jesus was wonderful. Zacchaeus realized that he had done wrong things and recognized that he needed to change. Then he told the Lord that he would give part of his possessions to the poor and that he would return whatever he had taken from someone. Then Jesus said, “Today salvation has come to this house…” Luke 19:9b.
Sometimes we too do things that do not please God. A child can disobey the parents. You can tell a lie. You can push a classmate or say a bad word. What should we do when we realize we made a mistake? We should not hide or place the blame on someone else. We should recognize our mistakes, ask for forgiveness and change our attitude.
If I lied, I will tell the truth. If I disobeyed, I will ask for forgiveness and obey. If I took something that isn’t mine, I’ll return it. If I treated someone badly, I will ask for forgiveness. That’s what Zacchaeus learned: it’s not enough to say he made a mistake. You have to want to change. The Word of God teaches us: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins…” 1 John 1:9a.
How wonderful! When we recognize our sin and confess it to the Lord, He forgives us. And the Holy Spirit helps us realize when we do something that does not please God.
Conclusion
Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus, but that encounter changed his life. He recognized that he had done wrong things, repented and decided to change. And Jesus said, “Today salvation has come to this house…” Luke 19:9b. Let’s recognize our errors, ask the Lord for forgiveness and change how we behave. Jesus loves you and wants you to learn to walk in the path that pleases God.
