Topic: The Miracles of Jesus
And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went andwashed, and came back seeing”. John 9:7
The purpose of the lesson is to teach that, when we hear and obey the Word of God, our spiritual eyes are open, we have our lives sanctified and we get to know the Lord Jesus more and more.
Note: The teacher should read John 9 when studying the lesson.
Introduction
We often meet someone and know who they are, yet we do not know much about them. The same can happen with the Lord Jesus. We may hear about Him and know the stories from the Bible, but the Lord desires for us to get to know Him better each day.
In today’s lesson, we will learn about a man who was blind from birth and had an encounter with Jesus. From that day on, he came to know more and more who Jesus truly was. May we, too, come to know the Lord Jesus better and better through this teaching.
Development
One day Jesus was in Jerusalem with His disciples when He saw a man who had been blind from birth. The disciples asked who had sinned to cause him to be born blind—was it him or his parents? Jesus replied that it was not because of any specific sin committed by the man or his parents, but so that the works of God might be revealed in him. Then He declared: “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world” (John 9:5).
That man could not see the light, but Jesus—the light of the world—stood before him, ready to transform his life forever.
Jesus approached the blind man, spat on the ground, made mud with His saliva, anointed the man’s eyes, and gave him a command: “And said to him, ‘Go, wash in the Pool of Siloam’ (which translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing” (John 9:7). The man heard Jesus’s word and obeyed. He went to the Pool of Siloam, washed, and returned with his sight! Hallelujah! For the first time in his life he could see.
His neighbors were amazed and asked how it had happened. He told them: “A man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to the Pool of Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed, and I received sight” (John 9:11). Did you notice how he referred to Jesus? “A Man called Jesus.” He had experienced Jesus’s power, but there was still much more for him to learn about the Lord.
He was taken to the Pharisees, who began questioning him about the healing. When they asked what he said about the One who had opened his eyes, he replied: “He is a prophet” (John 9:17b).
The Pharisees continued to question him and even summoned his parents, who confirmed that he had been born blind. But that man remained steadfast in his testimony regarding what he had experienced and declared: “One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.” John 9:25b. He could not answer everything, but no one could take away from him the experience he had shared with Jesus. The religious leaders continued to question him and, ultimately, cast him out.
Jesus learned that he had been cast out, went to meet him again, and asked: “Do you believe in the Son of God?” John 9:35b. He replied: “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?” John 9:36b. Then Jesus revealed Himself: “You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you.” John 9:37b. And the man answered: “Lord, I believe!” And he worshiped Him. John 9:38
The experience of this blind man offers us a profound lesson. He obeyed Jesus’s word and went to the pool. The pool of water teaches us about the Word of God, which washes us. The Bible says: “…to sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word” (Ephesians 5:26).
Just as that man went to the pool and washed, we need to hear, treasure, and obey the Word of God. It is through obedience that we gain understanding of the Word, are sanctified, have our faith strengthened, and come to know Jesus better.
And notice how that man’s knowledge of Jesus grew. At first, he said, “A Man called Jesus” (John 9:11). Later, he declared, “He is a prophet” (John 9:17b). Finally, when Jesus revealed Himself to him as the Son of God, he replied, “Lord, I believe!” And he worshipped Him (John 9:38).
Do you see the transformation? Jesus opened that man’s eyes so he could see, but He also opened his spiritual eyes so he could know who Jesus truly was. And this is what the Lord does for us. Jesus is the light of the world, and when He enters our lives, we no longer need to walk in darkness. The Word teaches us: “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8).
Walking in the light means living according to the Word: speaking the truth, obeying, forgiving, loving, maintaining a life of prayer, guarding our hearts against sin, and choosing what pleases the Lord. Therefore, when the Word shows us that a certain attitude does not please God, our spiritual eyes are being opened. We begin to see what we previously did not perceive and choose to walk in the light.
That blind man’s experience also offers us another precious lesson: we do not want merely to know who Jesus is or to be familiar with Bible stories. We want to know Him more and more; through His Word and the experiences we have with Him. May we seek Jesus increasingly with each passing day, enjoying His love, His peace…
That man also left us a wonderful testimony: “One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.” John 9:25b
We may not be able to answer every question about the Bible, but we can testify to what God has done in our lives and invite others to get to know Jesus as well.
Conclusion
That man received sight, but he also came to know more and more who Jesus was. It all began when he heard the word of the Lord and obeyed.
We also want to hear and obey God’s Word so that we may grow in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus. And the more we know Him, the more we will desire to serve and worship Him: “I believe, Lord.” And he worshipped Him. (John 9:38)

Question for Adolescents
Read John, chapter 9, verses 35 to 38, and answer: What happened when Jesus revealed Himself to the man who had been blind? Answer: He believed in Jesus as the Son of God and worshipped Him. “He said, ‘Lord, I believe.’ And he worshiped Him.” John 9:38
