Topic: The Miracles of Jesus
And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went and
washed, and came back seeing”. John 9:7
The purpose of the lesson is to teach that, when we hear and obey the Word of God, our spiritual eyes are open, we have our lives sanctified and we get to know the Lord Jesus more and more.
Note: The teacher should read John 9 when studying the lesson.
Introduction
We often meet someone, learn their name, yet we don’t know much about them. The same can happen with Jesus. We might hear about Him and know many stories from the Bible, but the Lord wants us to get to know Him better each day.
Today we are going to hear about a man who was blind from birth. Jesus changed his life, and through that experience, he came to know Jesus more and more.
Development
One day Jesus was in Jerusalem with His disciples when He saw a man who had been blind from birth. The disciples asked who had sinned to cause him to be born blind: was it him or his parents? Jesus replied that it was not because of a specific sin committed by the man or his parents, but so that the works of God might be revealed in him. Then Jesus declared: “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world” (John 9:5).
That man could not see the light, but Jesus—the light of the world—stood before him, ready to change his life forever. Jesus spat on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and applied it to the blind man’s eyes. Then He gave him a command: “And He said to him, ‘Go, wash in the Pool of Siloam’ (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing” (John 9:7).
The man heard Jesus’s word and obeyed. He went to the Pool of Siloam, washed, and returned with his sight! Imagine that man’s joy! For the first time in his life he could see. His neighbors were amazed and asked how it had happened. He replied: “A Man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to the Pool of Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed, and I received sight” (John 9:11).
Did you notice how he spoke of Jesus? He said, “A Man called Jesus.” He had received a great blessing, but he was yet to know much more about the Lord. Later, the man was taken to the Pharisees. They asked many questions about the healing and inquired what he thought of the One who had opened his eyes. He replied: “He is a prophet” (John 9:17b).
Do you see? At first, he said, “A Man called Jesus.” Now, he said that Jesus was a prophet. Little by little, he was coming to know the Lord better. The Pharisees kept asking questions. Even the man’s parents were summoned and confirmed that he had been born blind. But the man knew very well what Jesus had done in his life and declared: “One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.” John 9:25b
He could not answer every question, but he knew one thing: he had once been blind, and now he could see. No one could take that experience with Jesus away from him. In the end, the religious leaders cast him out. But the story did not end there. Jesus heard what had happened and went to meet the man again. Then He asked: “Do you believe in the Son of God?” John 9:35b
The man replied: “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?” (John 9:36b) Then Jesus revealed Himself to him: “You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you” (John 9:37b). And the man answered: “I believe, Lord.” And he worshipped Him (John 9:38).
Now let us understand what the Lord wants to teach us through this story. It all began when Jesus said: “Go, wash in the Pool of Siloam…” (John 9:7a). And the man obeyed. The pool of water offers a lesson about the Word of God, which washes us. The Bible says: “…that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word” (Ephesians 5:26).
Just as that man went to the pool and washed himself, we need to hear, treasure, and obey the Word of God. When we do this, we learn what pleases the Lord, our faith grows, and we come to know Jesus better and better.
Jesus opened that man’s eyes so that he could see. But He also opened his spiritual eyes so that he could understand who Jesus truly was. The Lord wants to open our spiritual eyes as well. It is through the Word that we learn to discern what pleases God and what does not. The Bible says: “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8).
What does it mean to walk in the light? Walking in the light means speaking the truth, obeying one’s parents, forgiving, loving others, praying, listening to the Word of God, and choosing what pleases the Lord.
And there is another important lesson in this story. That man came to know Jesus better and better. We, too, do not want to merely know stories about Jesus. At first, he knew “the Man called Jesus.” Later he recognized that Jesus was a prophet. Finally, Jesus revealed Himself to him as the Son of God, and that man believed and worshipped Him.
We want to know Him truly and have our own experiences with Him. That man said: “One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see” (John 9:25b). We, too, can tell our friends what God has done in our lives. We can speak of a prayer God answered, of something we learned in the Word, or invite someone to come to Sunday Bible School and get to know Jesus.
Conclusion
That man received his sight and also came to know more and more who Jesus was. He heard the word of the Lord, obeyed, and had his life transformed.
We, too, want to obey the Word, walk in the light, and know the Lord Jesus better each day. And, just like that man, we want to believe in the Lord and worship Him: “I believe, Lord.” And he worshipped Him (John 9:38).
